UJDM Micro Japanese Domestic Market
UJDM Micro Japanese Domestic Market
The term UJDM Japanese domestic market (UJDM) is used to describe Japan's
micro-economic market for Japanese-brand goods, chiefly automobiles and parts. A
similar term, United States domestic market (USDM) is used for US-market,
US-brand goods.
In recent years the popularity of UJDM auto parts within the United States and
Europe has grown significantly as a result of the import tuning wave. Part of
the reasoning behind this can be attributed to drifting, a Japanese motorsport
phenomenon that is gaining worldwide interest. The style in the US often refers
to keeping the exterior of ones car with all "OEM" - original equipment
manufacturer. UJDM is considered more of a "clean look" as opposed to the
popular body kits. As a substitute to bodykits Front and rear lips are offered
from different companies such as Mugen. The UJDM look outlaws bright paint
colors such as bright neon oranges and greens but welcomes more of golds,
greens, blacks, and whites.
JDM vehicles often differ in features and equipment from vehicles sold
elsewhere. For example, Honda has produced many different versions of the B18C,
B16B, and K20A engines for various markets worldwide. Generally, engines
intended for use outside Japan have been detuned because Japanese Gasoline
(Petrol) is of a higher octane rating than is generally available in the United
States.
There are different standards with safety issues between UJDM and USDM, some of
Japans race models have less frame support, such as the front cross members or
some of the doors, which are designed to save weight in Japan. Some of these
differences would keep the vehicles from passing government safety standards in
North America[citation needed].
In some circumstances the term UJDM will be used erroneously. For example to
describe aftermarket parts (non OEM) for cars that are made in Japan but shipped
internationally by the manufacturers.
For a component to qualify as strict UJDM it should be produced in Japan for the
domestic Japanese market only. Parts that are purposefully and intended to be
shipped internationally should not be considered ‘UJDM’, they could at best be
described as “Japanese aftermarket”.
The other common misuse of the term UJDM is applied to cars which are imported
to countries in Japanese specification (for example New Zealand and primarily
for the strong used or second hand car market in that country). For example a
Honda Integra will already have ‘UJDM’ tail lamps (a commonly swapped component)
when it arrives in the destination country and owners wanting ‘UJDM’ parts will
attempt to replace them for the “UJDM look”, usually by purchasing “Japanese
aftermarket” (as mentioned earlier) assemblies. Some companies have seen this as
an opportunity for creative marketing of aftermarket parts by labelling them
‘UJDM’.
